Areas of the city

Granville Island

Neighbourhoods

The City of Vancouver is made up of a number of smaller neighbourhoods and communities; however, not everyone agrees on all of the names and boundaries of these areas.

Aside from identifying the distinct culture and character of different areas of Vancouver’s diverse population, neighbourhood boundaries provide a way to break up the city’s large geographical area for delivering services and resources.

City areas

On the City of Vancouver website, we use areas, not true neighbourhoods, to focus information for particular parts of the city.

Each of the 21 identified areas has its own webpage with community-specific information including local services and amenities, City news, projects and initiatives, and a calendar of events for the area. These areas may also include several smaller neighbourhoods that would not generate enough news and events on their own.

Grouping neighbourhoods into areas helps to ensure relevant information appears on the area page.
