Fees and charges at the Transfer Station and Landfill

The City of Vancouver takes the following steps to calculate your disposal rates:

  1. On arrival at the Landfill or Transfer Station, staff ask what items you are dropping off, and weigh your vehicle
  2. You dispose of your items
  3. Staff weigh your vehicle again, and calculate how much the dumped items weigh based on the difference
  4. You pay your fees before leaving the Landfill or Transfer Station, or if you have a Landfill account, you leave and receive a bill at the end of the month

Sort your load before drop-off

If you come to the Landfill or Transfer Station with a mixed load of items, you can:

  • Weigh in, then drop off one item type at a time, and loop back to the weigh scales after each item is dropped off and fees will be based on each item type
  • Weigh all items at once and dispose of everything at the garbage rate

The Landfill and Transfer Station encourage you to sort your load before drop-off to ensure you do not have to pay additional fees.

Surcharges

If recyclable items make up 5% or more of your garbage load, a 50% surcharge will be added to your fees. Recyclable items include:

Materials recycled through take-back recycling programs (such as paint, used oil, batteries, electronics, tires, and more) are not allowed to be disposed of as garbage. If your garbage load includes one or more of these materials and is not removed before disposal, you will be charged an additional $50.

Check Metro Vancouver Recycles to see if an item can be recycled.
