The future of Northeast False Creek

Northeast False Creek is the last remaining piece of large undeveloped land in the downtown along the False Creek Waterfront.

In 2015, City Council decided to proceed with a plan to replace the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts with a more resilient and connected street network. The decision is dependent on a new area plan for Northeast False Creek where replacing the viaducts is a self-funding solution.


The Northeast False Creek Area Plan provides an opportunity to achieve:

  • Steps towards reconciliation with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, Chinese Canadians, and the Black Community
  • A substantial gain in public amenities valued at around $1.5 billion, including new childcare and community facilities
  • One of the largest social housing packages in the city’s history for around 3,250 people
  • A larger Creekside Park as part of 18 acres of new parks and open spaces
  • A new iconic waterfront district with 1.8 million square feet of space for 6,000 to 8,000 new jobs
  • Contributions toward the retention and restoration of nearby heritage buildings
  • Great streets and seismic resiliency funded through development
  • An improved transportation network

Over the past 15 months, we’ve heard from thousands of people on the future of Northeast False Creek. Based on what we heard, we refined the Area Plan and incorporated elements you told us were a priority.

Let us know what you think of the Refined Area Plan, including the future street network and the park design process, before City Council decides on the plan and streetscape design in early 2018.

A major arts and culture destination that hosts events and programs for Vancouverites and responds to the needs of cultural communities.

Public amenities to meet the area's growing, changing needs: childcare, community centres, cultural spaces, affordable housing, and more.

Rezoning and development
