Water main flushing program

Water main flushing helps to maintain the high quality of Vancouver's water.

To maintain good water quality, the City of Vancouver flushes sediment and mineral build-up from the water main system.

This is done by adjusting the valves in the water system, and opening fire hydrants to allow large quantities of water to flow through the pipes.

How flushing affects your water

NOTE: Your water supply will not be shut off during the water main flushing program.

During water main flushing, your water may become cloudy. Cloudy water is not a health concern - clear your water by running cold water taps for 10 to 20 minutes after our crews have finished flushing.

You may also experience low water pressure or no water pressure during flushing.

If you still have low water pressure or no water at the end of the day, call 3-1-1.

When will the water mains be flushed in my neighbourhood?

Residents will be notified of water main flushing after it is scheduled.

The information will be posted on this website. As well, public notices are made through popular neighbourhood newspapers for home owners, and hand-delivered notices are sent to businesses and apartment dwellers.

Water main flushing program - Spring 2013

The areas shaded on the map below are scheduled for routine water main flushing between Tuesday, April 2 and Friday, May 31. Cleaning will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

During this period, there may be temporary discolouration and/or cloudiness of the water. Safety of drinking water will not be affected. Cloudy water can be cleared by running your cold water for 10-20 minutes after the crew has finished flushing. To avoid potentially cloudy water for drinking, you may wish to refrigerate drinking water ahead of time.
