Hit and Run Team
The Hit and Run Team consists of three officers. It is presently part of the Traffic Section and
reports to the Inspector I/C Traffic. The section is responsible for
coordinating and administering all hit and run cases that occur in the
city of Vancouver.
During past several years, the number of hit and run claims
reported to
the police have increased dramatically. An investigation commonly
involves liasing with Crown Counsel, private lawyers, insurance
adjusters, victims, witnesses, next of kin and Motor Vehicle Branch.
Fraudulent Hit and Run
Claim Pilot Project
In March of 1995, the Hit and Run Team, together with I.C.B.C.,
started a
pilot project to reduce the number of fraudulent hit and run
claims. Two constables would work together with I.C.B.C. at
I.C.B.C.'s Claim Centre at 456 West 5th Ave. These two members
would start the investigation as soon as the hit and run was
reported. The project was so successful in reducing the number of
hit and run claims that I.C.B.C. decided to continue with the project
and extend it throughout the province.
