How we walk the talk to support pedestrians

Seawall in Vancouver

Pedestrians are the City's top priority. Making all streets more accessible, safe and enjoyable for walking is an important part of our effort to become the Greenest City in the world by 2020. We support walking by designing and maintaining streets to meet pedestrians’ needs for commuting, recreation, and other activities.

Walk to improve your health

By walking 30 minutes per day, you can reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression.

Walk to save money

Walking is free. Driving a car means spending money on gas, insurance, and maintenance.

Walk to connect with others

Walking builds a sense of place, and increases the chances to interact with other members of your community, which can be difficult when driving a car or riding a bike.

Walk to help the environment

You produce no greenhouse gases when walking, and pedestrian space is an efficient use of limited land space.

Whether you are going to work, taking your kids to school, or picking something up at the grocery store, choose walking.

The pedestrian survey

In 2008, the City conducted a pedestrian survey. The information collected included number of pedestrians, start and end points of a trip, and purpose of a trip.

The City is using this information for planning purposes. Another survey is planned for 2013.
