Budget priorities for 2012

Over the past few years, the public has consistently identified priority issues they see facing the city.

Affordability and housing continue to be high priorities for people across the city. Residents and businesses alike want strong fiscal management at City Hall, improved public transit and safe, healthy neighbourhoods with a diverse range of accessible community and recreational facilities.

Here is a list of the City's top spending priorities in the capital budget.

Utilities and public works: $82 million

Water and sewer

The City's water main replacement program ($10.4 million) will help maintain Vancouver's water main system in good working order while the sewer main separation program ($23 million) will help us meet our regulartory commitment to eliminate combined sewer overflows by the year 2050. Neighbourhood Energy Utility

To connect all buildings in Southeast False Creek to the Neighbourhood Energy Utility, the City has prioritized an extension of the Neighbourhood energy utility ($0.6 million). Find out more about the Neighbourhood Energy Utility.

Civic infrastructure: $53 million

City operations

We are investing $53 million to improve our civic infrastructure, from seismic upgrades at City Hall, to integrating service yards, replacing outdated hardware and software, making our fleets more sustainable, and more.

Transportation: $52 million

Parking

The City plans to maintain parking assets (the City's 21 parkades, 12 surface parking lots, and 9,200 parking meters) in good order, as well as to increase paid parking in, and near, commercial districts among other improvements to parking infrastructure across the City. Cycling

Public transit

Roads

The City will be repaving streets ($8 million), improving arterial streets ($5.5 million) and working on the Powell Street overpass ($3 million) among other road projects slated for the next few years. Community facilities: $38 million

Archives

Vancouver Public Library

Vancouver's Public Libraries are essential community services and spaces. The City of Vancouver is continuing its investment in its public libraries.

Recreation

The City will be investing $6.2 million into the initial phase, assessments, and design for the Marpole Community Facility - one of the ways we are helping support recreation in Vancouver. Learn more about the City's recreation programs and facilities.

Parks and open spaces: $14 million

Public art

Hastings Park / PNE Master Plan

Hastings Park / PNE Master Plan: The Fair in the Park — a 30-year initiative to transform the Hastings Park of today into a greener, year-round destination for park use, culture, sport, recreation, and fun.

Housing: $7 million

Housing and homelessness

The City's funding strategy is to provide grants, partner with multiple partners, or acquire properties itself to tackle the complicated problem of housing affordability and homelessness in Vancouver. The 2012 capital bdget has allocated $6.9 million for maintenance on Vancouver's existing affordable housing stock, and aquiring new affordable housing. Public safety: $7 million

Police

Fire
