Official celebrations and observances

City Council and staff recognize and value the contributions of the diverse communities that make Vancouver one of the most livable cities in the world. We also observe internationally recognized days and significant events in our history.

In 2023 we will continue to support the Council-approved official celebrations and observances virtually.

We recognize these official celebrations and observances through a range of acknowledgements, including:

  • Reading proclamations or recognitions during a Council meeting if it aligns with a Council meeting day
  • Featuring the official event on vancouver.ca with a video acknowledgement and write-up
  • Providing social media acknowledgements and illuminations of City Hall and Burrard Bridge

Communities are responsible for submitting requests for proclamations and City Hall and Burrard Street Bridge illuminations.

Communities may choose to do more to observe or celebrate their dates, and this is at the discretion and resourcing of the community group. For example, see the International Holocaust Remembrance Day video  produced by the Jewish community of Vancouver.

The official celebrations and observances listed below have been approved by City Council.
